SPECIAL EDUCATION SERVICES
The Athens City School District provides a full range of special education services for students (ages 3-21) with disabilities whose educational needs cannot be met through the regular educational program. Students who have disabilities that meet the criteria established by the State Department of Education and/or the federal government are afforded due process rights under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
Conditions that may qualify a student for these services include: specific learning disabilities, mental retardation, emotional disturbance, and development delays. Other related medical conditions may qualify a student for special education services. Students suspected of any of these conditions have the right to a comprehensive evaluation by a multi-disciplinary team, a free appropriate education with non-disabled students to the greatest extent possible and due process rights. All records and information regarding the assessment and the Individualized Education Program (IEP) of the student is kept confidential. Parents have the right to review records upon request.
