Operation Child Find
Athens City School District makes every effort to locate, identify and evaluate children that might be in need of educational services. “Child Find” is the term used for this process and a referral may be made by anyone that suspects a child is homeless or in need of special education services. Referral can be made in writing to Dianna Calfee, Supervisor of Special Education and Federal Projects, Athens City Schools, 943 Crestway Dr., Athens, Tennessee, 37303 or by calling 745-1516
- Children that would be considered “homeless” qualify for services by answering this question:
Where does the student stay at night?
- In his/her home owned by parents
- Temporarily with more than one family
- In a motel or hotel
- In a shelter
- Other arrangements
- Children with disabilities from age three to twenty-one may be eligible for special education services. Children of school age, eligible for special education service, may receive their services in the public school. Preschool children may receive their services through our preschool program. Students with disabilities who attend private or religiously affiliated schools and home schooled may be eligible for special education services if certifying criteria is met. A student is deemed eligible for special education services if assessment results indicate the presence of a disability.
Americans With Disabilities Act
The Federal Americans with Disabilities Act protects persons with disabilities, those who associate with the disabled and those who help or encourage others to exercise rights granted by the act. Athens City School District wants to ensure that these rights are protected, that everyone can participate in or benefit from the system’s programs, services and activities offered. It is the right of each person to ask for a reasonable accommodation if it is has not been provided. Dianna Calfee, Supervisor of Special Education and Federal Projects directs compliance efforts. Despite the best efforts of the district, problems may arise so a grievance procedure has been established to ensure that a complaint will be heard.
