Physical Education
Mr. giles

All students must participate in physical education.  If a limitation is to be placed on participation in physical education, a written statement should be presented which clearly sets forth the limitations and is signed by a doctor.  If a student needs to miss physical education for a minor illness, the parent must send a note to the teacher, stating the nature of the illness.  If 3 consecutive days of PE are missed, a doctor’s excuse will be needed to miss any more classes.  Students are required to wear gym suits or a change of clothes.  Any exceptions need to be worked out with the instructor.  Intramural activities are offered after school for 5th and 6th grade students.

Physical Education is an integral part of the curriculum at North City Elementary School.  The program is a step-by-step method by which the teacher may select an area of development, the behavioral objectives of the area of development and the specific learning experiences by which the area of development may be best accomplished.  Time needs to be spent regularly in the elementary grades on activities that improve and develop motor skills.

Curriculum

Lessons and activities include but are not limited to:  Swimming, Conditioning Activities, Team Sports (Basketball, Floor Hockey, Football, Soccer, Volleyball, Wiffleball/Softball), Gymnastics, Rhymes (Folk Dance, Tinikling, Lummi Sticks, Square Dance),  Track and Field, Individual Sports (Bowling, Golf, Tennis), Camping (canoeing, fishing, spelunking, archery, marksmanship, outdoor skills, cooking, wildlife, forestry, crafts) and Physical Fitness Testing.   Related site for lesson plans and ideas at PE Central.

Fitness Testing

The fitness testing we do at North City is taken from the President’s Challenge designed by The President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.  It includes five(5) categories that test the students’ fitness level in all major areas of the body.  It includes:  Curl-ups (stomach strength and endurance), Shuttle Run (to test the agility of a student), One Mile Run/Walk (Measures heart/ lung endurance), Pull-Ups/Arm Hang (measures upper body strength and endurance) and the V-Reach (Measures flexibility of lower back and hamstrings).  The test is given 2 times a year (Spring and Fall)

Intramurals

Intramural activities are an outgrowth of the physical education program and only those activities included in the curriculum are included in the program.  All the equipment is furnished by the school.  The intramural sports are played after school hours, for approximately and hour each day, three days a week, for 30 weeks out of the year.

Sports chosen from are:  Flag Football, Soccer, Basketball, Volleyball and Softball/Wiffleball.

Camping

An important aspect of the total Physical Education Program in Athens City Schools is the school camping program.  All children enrolled in the fifth and sixth grades have the opportunity to attend camp.  Fifth grade camp is conducted in the early spring and sixth grade camp takes place in the fall of each school year.  School camp provides many benefits for the student that cannot be attained in the regular physical education class.
