Enrichment Activities

Stock Market- 4th-6th grade students will virtually buy and sell stocks.  Students choose their own stocks and are responsible for checking them each week.  Stocks are tracked by using a graph.

PowerPoint's- Each student will research a Science or Social Studies topic.  They will then prepare a report by using Microsoft Power Point.  This presentation is shown to their parents at the Curriculum Fair each year.

Educational Trips- An educational field trip is taken each year by the Enrichment students.  We have visited the Huntsville Space & Rocket center and the Tennessee Theater to view the Broadway production of Beauty & the Beast. This is a great experience for the students!

What is Gifted?

A student whose intellectual abilities and potential for achievement are so outstanding that special provisions are required to meet his/her educational needs.

Gifted Services

Special services are often required to meet the unique needs of gifted children.  A team of professionals and the child’s parent(s) plan the students’ educational program based on the assessment information obtained through the evaluation process.

Characteristics of Gifted Students

Gifted students are all very unique.  They have different interests, different personalities and different areas of high ability.  However, these children also share certain traits.  It is the degree to which they exhibit these traits that set them apart.  If most of these characteristics describe your child or your student, you may wish to consider screening.

  • Advanced mathematical   ideas

  • Extensive vocabulary

  • Insatiable curiosity

  • Preference for older  playmates

  • Long attention spans

  • Sensitivity

  • Compassion for others

  • Perfectionism

  • Thinks independently

  • Good problem-solving abilities

The Athens City Schools provides a comprehensive Gifted Services Program to our identified students.  This program follows all guidelines established by the Tennessee State Department of Education.

The students in the program receive 3 hours of direct service one day each week.  These students are transported from their home school to North City School, where services are maintained. Pull-out services are provided through the 6th grade.  When identified students enter the 7th grade, their needs are met through the curriculum, i.e. honors' classes, etc.

The program’s focus is directed mainly toward the science and social studies areas.  The intent is to provide the support needed to advance and nurture the talent of students enabling each to rise toward excellence both in and out of the classroom situation.

The Referral

Parent, teachers or any community professional may refer a student for screening. The program serves students that have demonstrated high academic achievement and persistent curiosity.

Candidates are usually highly motivated and have demonstrated leadership abilities.

Identification

A multi-disciplinary team of educational professionals considers screening information, previous evaluations, and  teacher  and/or  parent input  to determine if a comprehensive evaluation is needed.  The team’s decision is based on multiple data sources.  All procedural safe guards are followed to ensure evaluation procedures are non-discriminatory.

The Process

  • Referral for screening.

  • The Initial Screening completed by the classroom teacher.

  • A letter is sent to notify families of screening results.

  • The Assessment team will meet to determine the need for further testing.

  • If further testing is warranted, it is completed by the school psychologist.

  • All results from this testing are shared with the families and teachers at an M-Team meeting.

Notes from Mrs. Robinson...

  • We are excited about starting a new year in Enrichment!

  • We have saved most of the notebooks from last year, however if your child would like to bring a new one, that would be fine.

  • Also note, please check your emails often.  We will be sending more correspondence this way in order to save paper!

  • GREAT NEWS TO 4th, 5th & 6th GRADERS!  We will be adding an extra hour to the services provided to you.  In addition to your time out of class, Mrs. Pryor or I will be coming INTO your classroom for an extra hour a week.  During this time, we will be helping the teacher to extend and enrich what is presented to you in the classroom.

Enrichment classes will begin on Monday, August 17th!

Can't wait to see you!
