Brian Heatherly
Brian Heatherly has been an Athens City Schools Board member since 2008. He is a 1987 graduate of Union City High School, received his Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from the University of Tennessee at Martin in 1992, and will begin working on his Masters in Human Resource Development at Tusculum College in October. He and his family moved to Athens in July, 2004. Brian is presently a Retail Sales Consultant with Verizon Wireless in Athens. His wife Tracye is a medical laboratory technician at Woods Memorial Hospital in Etowah. They are the proud parents of three children: John Mychal lives in Chattanooga, Dakota is a freshman pre-engineering student at Cleveland State Community College, and Katie is a senior at McMinn County High School. The family attends Trinity United Methodist Church in Athens where Brian has served as youth coordinator, chairman of the Staff/Parish Relations Committee and President of the United Methodist Men. He has also served on the Finance Committee as well as the Administrative Council.
Before moving to Athens Brian was a teacher and coach in the Lake County and Union City School Systems. He then began his experience in the automotive supplier manufacturing sector as an area manager with Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Union City and then continued in that field while working with Denso Manufacturing from 2004 until his present position with Verizon. He still, however, maintains a passion for education. In 2000 he was elected to serve on the Union City Board of Education and in 2002 was chosen by his peers to serve as Vice Chairman of the Board. He maintained that position until he and his family moved to Athens. Brian has achieved Level Four status through the Tennessee School Boards Association boardmanship program and hopes to continue with this endeavor while serving on the Athens City Board of Education.
Brian enjoys spending as much time as he can being deeply involved with the Athens City School system. He has served on the Athens City Schools' Family Engagement Committee and the North City Family Engagement Committee. He has also served as President of the Athens Junior High School PTO. He is a member of the D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) program at Athens City Middle School.
In his spare time Brian enjoys watching Katie showcase her musical talent with the McMinn County High School Marching Band. He also enjoys spending time serving his church in many capacities.
A quote from Brian: "The mission statement of our schools states that we, as a school system, will collectively provide for all students to develop in a multifaceted way. I hope to work diligently and in the best interest of our children so this can be accomplished. I am excited about this opportunity that the citizens of Athens have given me and promise to do my best."
