The Athens City Board of education is pleased to offer our educators and students access  to school networks  for the use of the Internet and electronic mail.  Such access will enable teachers and students to explore and research thousands of libraries, bulletin boards and databases worldwide while exchanging messages with other users throughout the world.  Parents and Guardians should be warned that some material accessible in this manner may contain some material that is potentially offensive to some people.  While our objective is to make Internet access available to enhance educational objectives and goals, students may inadvertently be exposed to some of this potentially offensive material as well.  We believe that benefits to the students, in the form of information resources, exceed such disadvantages.  The Athens City Schools support and respect each family's decision as to whether or not their children will be allowed to participate.

     Students will work under the direct supervision of the classroom teacher.  No student will be given an account or individual access to Internet.  School personnel will review and evaluate resources as much as possible to offer menus of materials which are instructionally sound.

          As an addendum to Board Policy and procedures on student rights and responsibilities, the following are not permitted:

          Sending or displaying offensive messages or pictures

          Using obscene language

          Harassing, insulting, or attacking others

          Damaging computers, computer systems, or computer networks

          Violating copyright laws

          Using another's password

          Trespassing in another's folders, work, or files

          Intentionally wasting limited resources

          Employing the network for commercial purposes

         Any action which violates existing Board Policy or Public Law

*Violations may result in a loss of access as well as other disciplinary action deemed appropriate.

As the parent/legal guardian of the minor student signing above, I give my permission for my child to access networked computer services for the use of the Internet and electronic mail as long as he/she remains in the Athens City Schools System.  I understand that some materials may be objectionable, but I accept responsibility for guidance and for conveying standards for my child to follow.  Neither my child's teacher, principal, school nor school system will be held responsible should my child deliberately or inadvertently access material which I consider offensive or inappropriate.
